James A. Kohlstedt is a partner and founder of The Kohlstedt Law Firm LLC. Mr. Kohlstedt practices in the areas of real estate, including transactional, financing, leasing, business counseling and transactions, and estate planning and estate administration. Jim worked for several large firms in Chicago and Oak Brook prior to establishing his own firm.
After completing graduate school, Jim initially worked as a Tax Specialist for KPMG. He then joined the law Firm of Bishop & Crawford, which relocated to Oak Brook, Illinois. After becoming a partner with Bishop & Crawford, he became one of the founding partners of the Oak Brook office of Arnstein Lehr in 1987. Along with several other attorneys, he became a senior partner with Keck Mahin & Cate in 1987, and established their Oak Brook office. In addition to his real estate and corporate practice, Jim was the partner in charge of the technology and trade association practices for the Keck Mahin & Cate Oak Brook office. This office joined McBride Baker & Coles in 1997. When the Oak Brook office closed after merging with Holland & Knight in 2001, Jim established his own office in Oak Brook.
Jim received his undergraduate degree from Northwestern University (Political Science), his JD and MBA (Finance) degrees from Indiana University, and attended the DePaul University Masters in Tax Program.
Jim has been active in a variety of local and national boards and organizations. He was President and Chairman of the Oak Brook Jaycees. He served for twenty years on the Board of Education for Lyons Township High School, serving as President and Vice President during his tenure. He served as the Chairman of the Facilities Committee during the construction of the South Campus pool, field house, and performing arts center, and received the Award of Excellence from the Illinois Chapter of the National School Public Relations Association for his leadership in this extensive construction project. He has been a regular speaker at programs with respect to technology, financing, and estate planning. He served on the Planned Giving Committee for Elmhurst College. He was a delegate to President Bill Clinton’s National Conference on Travel and Tourism, and organized and was general counsel for the Illinois Tourism Association, later known as Visit Illinois. Mr. Kohlstedt also served on the Travel and Tourism Advisory Council for Moraine Valley College. He previously served on the Collegiate Advisory Panel to the U.S. Army ROTC Cadet Command based in Fort Monroe, Virginia. He is a member of the Illinois, Colorado and Wisconsin Bar Associations.
